The Olympics has always been envisioned as an event that brings people together through the vigor of sports. This sentiment has survived even after such a turbulent history of the tournament.

However, now with the power of anime, Olympic is taking this sentiment to a whole new level!

Through its Foundation for Culture and Heritage (OFCH), the International Olympic Committee began streaming the anime short “Tomorrow’s Leaves,” produced by Studio Ponoc, to commemorate the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on 23rd July 2021.

One look at the short film, and I remember the Ghibli classic film Ponyo. The short has pleasing music that goes perfectly well with the silent characters. Set in a world of incredible wonders, we follow five kids from different nations who band together to save the world.

The Ghibli resemblance is primarily due to the influence of the director Yoshiyuki Momose, who closely worked on feature films such as Grave of the Fireflies and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

Takatsugu Muramatsu, known for Lu over the wall, carried out a fascinating mix of music and sound effects for the short film.

The short was completely hand-drawn and is the first commissioned work for Studio Ponoc by the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage’s Arts & Culture. The anime short features thrilling action sequences mixed along with the fantastical nature of the dream world.

This video is the perfect treat for anyone who is a fan of Ghibli and sports as it brings out the best of both worlds. So grab yourself some popcorn and watch the short film for free!
