We last saw the series in an anime form back in 2014. Given the popularity of the manga, it was somewhat unclear why there wasn’t an anime continuation immediately.

The anime ended with Takamura’s World Title defense against Eagle. The anime was expected to cover Itadaki’s fight, but that never happened.

We do not know if the speculated adaptation would be an anime series. As is the trend lately, we may see a movie be announced, which covers a particular arc in the manga. While this is not the best option for the series in the long term, the popularity spike with the release may just bring it back.

While the manga’s art is amazing, it is a whole another experience to see the likes of Takamura and Ippo fighting in anime. Whatever the announcement may be, it is safe to say fans will be excited either way.

About Hajime no Ippo

The anime centres around an under-confident Ippo Makunouchi – a victim of bullying. Unable to stand up to his bullies, Ippo builds a weak sense of self. During one of the incidents, he encounters a pro-boxer Takamura who brings him to the gym to heal. After much reflection and obstacles, Ippo takes up Boxing as a career and a way to strengthen himself.

The anime focuses on perseverance – something that applies not only to the sport but to life as a whole. It brings forth characters – even opponents – with depth, motivations and drives of their own and therefore, does not only center itself around Ippo’s perspective. The world is too big for that.
