One Piece Chapter 1070: Contains Hints about The End of Luffy’s Classic Fights

When it comes to Luffy’s performance in Gear 5, opinion among One Piece fans is evenly split. Half of the audience thinks Luffy’s new abilities in Gear 5: Nika are the best thing that could have happened to him, while the other half dislikes them in a subtle way because they are too powerful.

Few predicted the return of Gear 5 so soon after the conclusion of the battle between Luffy and Kaido in chapter 1049. A Gear 5 Luffy pummeled Lucci in chapters 1069 and 1070.

High stakes, an opponent stronger than Luffy, room to grow and improve, and a touch of seriousness characterize a classic Luffy battle.

One-sided brawls like the one Luffy had with Rob Lucci raise the possibility that we won’t see another classic Luffy battle in the foreseeable future. The final confrontation between Luffy and Emperor Kaido was just as ridiculous. Luffy’s battles will be more comedic than serious, barring any serious flaws in Gear 5: Nika.

A Rematch Between Luffy and Lucci

In Enies Lobby, our hero discovered that Lucci was every bit as formidable an opponent as Gear 2 Luffy. Lucci was the one who pushed Luffy to his breaking point, and even when he shifted into Gear 3 in Chapter 421, it wasn’t enough to defeat Lucci.

Two chapters later, in Chapter 427, the battle resumes, with Lucci taunting Luffy by claiming that his crew would be killed no matter what Luffy did. The deciding factor had arrived. In an effort to protect Robin and his nakama, Luffy countered Lucci’s strongest Rokuogan move with the Jet Gatling.

There isn’t a whole lot at stake in this Egghead fight. After learning that Atlas, a Vegapunk satellite, had brought food to Luffy, Luffy learns that Lucci attacked him. That alone demonstrates the positive shift that has occurred.

Right away, Luffy transforms into Gear 5: Nika, the same form that killed Kaido, “the strongest creature in the world.”

Lucci claims he has improved his strength considerably. Yes, he has successfully Awakened his Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit Model: Leopard Cat. To put it bluntly, even in his most powerful form, Lucci is still just a cat, while a fully Awakened Luffy is a true god.

The new Luffy, with his signature low-diffs and retro cartoon moves, easily dispatches Lucci. Luffy’s animation skills reach new heights in chapter 1070.

After realizing that Lucci is about to run right into his mouth, Luffy’s head grows to an abnormally gigantic size.

A novel Gatling gun, he masticates rocks directly from the ground and fires them as projectiles.

Luffy creates a pair of sunglasses out of thin air and uses them as a sniper weapon; he also uses moves like Gum-Gum Dawn Rocket to troll Lucci. He does it while laughing the whole time; it’s pretty funny to watch.

I get that Luffy is Joy Boy, the person who brings joy to everyone, but if he just smiles and blasts people like Lucci, who once pushed him to his limits, the effect won’t be as strong.

Luffy is unstoppable right now. There are times when Luffy demonstrates that he has not yet mastered his powers, such as when he spins so rapidly that he loses control. The fact that Gear 5 is the strongest ability in the series at the moment cannot be denied.

When he first used it on Kaido, we knew what was going to happen.

If Kaido hadn’t been so bloodied by the end of Wano, he might have given Luffy a more challenging fight in a one-on-one encounter.

While the final blow that did in Kaido was a Bajrang Gun, a Gear 5 technique infused with Conqueror’s and Armament Haki, the series of blows leading up to it were quite humiliating for the once-world’s-strongest creature.

As the Sun God Nika, the Warrior of Liberation, Luffy is the embodiment of freedom. He absorbs all of rubber’s elasticity and can bestow it on himself and others. One’s creativity is the only thing stopping this power from going full tilt.

Because of Kaido’s Boro Breath, Luffy picked up the floor and used it as a shield. He inflates Kaido like a balloon and twists him into a skipping rope. We’re talking about the terrifying Yonko Kaido here, the man who twice dispatched Luffy like a fly.

Following his Awakening, Luffy is simply in a different league of power and strength than any of the other characters.

Luffy’s Strength Knows No Limits

The issue is that Luffy can do anything he wants thanks to the power of his Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.

Gear 5 Luffy is an unstoppable monster, or worse, an unstoppable cartoon, capable of stomping out and replacing a Yonko and playing with a CP0 agent. Like Tom in Tom and Jerry, Luffy is unstoppable thanks to the Devil Fruit he ate, which gives him the ability to pull, twist, and otherwise manipulate events to his advantage.

In Wano, Luffy had his first Awakening as Joy Boy. The Drums of Liberation, last heard 800 years ago when Zunesha and Joy Boy traveled the world, were confirmed to be audible by Zunesha.

It was assumed by all that Luffy’s reawakening as Joy Boy was an isolated incident, meant to stop the brutality of Kaido and Orochi and free the people of Wano from their 20 years of servitude.

However, as seen in Chapter 1070, Luffy is not only able to access Gear 5 at will, but he can do so without suffering any significant drawbacks.

Luffy’s biggest disadvantages with Gear 2, 3, and 4 are that he loses stamina and becomes so exhausted that he can’t continue fighting.

Even Luffy’s appearance in Gear 5 reflects his exhaustion; he looks saggy and old, as if the gear itself had sucked his energy; however, this lack of fear for the gear doesn’t seem too significant.

After knocking Lucci out of the way, Luffy’s Gear 5 wears off and he passes out, only to awake on the vacuum rocket in a muddled state.

But in the Labophase, he quickly returns to normal.

Will we ever see Luffy fight like he used to?

We need greater stakes, a more formidable opponent, and rising emotion if we want a classic Luffy fight. These characteristics were present in all of Luffy’s previous battles, including his encounters with Katakuri, Doflamingo, and the Marines. We were on the edge of our seats because Luffy had a point to make.

You could say that Luffy’s motivation in challenging Lucci to a fight was to demonstrate his improved strength. This would have been more convincingly demonstrated had he defeated an Awakened Lucci using Gear 2 and some Haki. When you consider that Gear 5 can defeat Lucci, you may find yourself laughing.

There will be no return to classic Luffy battles until Gear 5 is made less ridiculous.

There needs to be something that tones down Gear 5, as much as I enjoy seeing Oda draw those panels with reckless abandon. There must be a significant disadvantage that prevents Luffy from entering Gear 5 at all.

And indeed, Luffy’s fatigue is almost instantaneous upon the depletion of Gear 5, while Lucci makes a surprisingly speedy recovery from defeat. Luffy may become too exhausted to continue using Gear 5 for long periods of time as a result of its cumulative effects. Perhaps the length of time it can stay on is decreasing the more he uses it.

Luffy’s failure to save Sentomaru is further evidence that he should not use Gear 5 until he has had more practice with it.

Kizaru sends a Buster Call to all Marine battleships, and at the end of chapter 1070, we see him sailing toward Egghead Island. A showdown between Luffy in Gear 5 and an Admiral would tell us more about when, or if, Luffy will return to his traditional fighting style.

A group of Kizaru’s men may eventually make it to Egghead Island, but Luffy, Vegapunk, and the Straw Hats may have already left.

Thus, we can expect to see Luffy use Gear 5 against Akainu, Blackbeard, and eventually Im-sama if not against Kizaru. I’m hoping for a good, old-fashioned fight where Luffy isn’t able to rely on Gear 5: Nika to defeat his foes, as those characters should legitimately be stronger than Luffy.
